2017 Football Game 3: Delaware State

Week 3 of the Mountaineers season saw a FCS opponent Delaware State come to Morgantown. WVU donned the White-Blue-Blue combo from the Kansas game last year. Some players wore blue cleats as well.

This combo has always felt mismatched to me even with the white accessories players wore. The white helmet seems really bland and basic but I've let my feelings known on that subject.

Next week the Mountaineers hit the road for the first time this year and begin Big XII play.

2017 Football Game 2: East Carolina

The Mountaineers returned to action with their home season opener against the Pirates of East Carolina. The game was designated as the annual "Gold Rush" game.

The Mountaineers broke out their typical "gold rush" combo with blue helmets with gold jerseys and pants. Players wore a variety of blue and gold cleats.

2017 Football Game 1: Virginia Tech

The 2017 season kicked off with the Battle for the Black Diamond trophy at FedEx Field. The two teams marked the occasion by taking a cue from the NFL's "color rush" and both donning solid color uniforms.

Throwback Thursday: The time WVU went throwback (sort of)

On November 9, 2013 West Virginia played host to Texas at Milan Puskar Stadium at Mountaineer Field. The mountaineers took the field in pre-game warm ups in a brand new combo with gold helmets with blue jerseys and pants. However when they returned to the field for kickoff they were donning white helmets and blue face masks with throwback decals.

I remember really liking this helmet and I still like said helmet over the current white helmet. During the 2013 season Texas also was wearing a throwback helmet design so for the neck down it was an awesome throwback game. Unfortunately the throwback helmet didn't mesh well with the current modern uniform especially with no white elements in the blue jerseys or pants. When the team wore the helmet the following year against Kansas State, they combined it with white pants and footwear which improved the look.

Sadly I think it was a missed opportunity for a full throwback uniform that can be used for time to time. In 2015 they altered the throwback helmet with the standard white face masks for games against Texas and Kansas State. What do you think, love it, hate it? Let us know!

Here's some additional shots from the game:

Observations from a Maniac: A tale of two 5's.

Ever since the 2013 rebrand of the WVU football team has been using a custom "pick-axe" font. It has been used across the team's social media, stadium scoreboards and of course the football jerseys. However one thing I noticed during the first game against William & Mary back in 2013 was the 5's seem off. When put side by side the difference is quite noticeable. On the jersey version the top of the  5 comes straight off into a square. The 5 should look like a mirrored version of the 2. The difference especially sticks out with the number 25.

Below are some reference pictures.

What do you think? Let us know! It will be football season before you know it. Until next time; Let's go....
