Throwback Thursday: The time WVU went throwback (sort of)

On November 9, 2013 West Virginia played host to Texas at Milan Puskar Stadium at Mountaineer Field. The mountaineers took the field in pre-game warm ups in a brand new combo with gold helmets with blue jerseys and pants. However when they returned to the field for kickoff they were donning white helmets and blue face masks with throwback decals.

I remember really liking this helmet and I still like said helmet over the current white helmet. During the 2013 season Texas also was wearing a throwback helmet design so for the neck down it was an awesome throwback game.

Observations from a Maniac: A tale of two 5's.

Ever since the 2013 rebrand of the WVU football team has been using a custom "pick-axe" font. It has been used across the team's social media, stadium scoreboards and of course the football jerseys. However one thing I noticed during the first game against William & Mary back in 2013 was the 5's seem off. When put side by side the difference is quite noticeable.

2016 Football Season in Review

The Mountaineers celebrated their 125th season in 2016 complete with a logo to mark the occasion. The logo was also on the side of the helmets during the season opener against Mizzou. During the season WVU broke out a few new combos including; blue pants with gold helmets & jerseys. A few "classic" combinations were worn (Blue helmet and jerseys with gold pants / Blue helmet white jersey and gold pants) which was great to see.

The black helmets in both the blue helmet and jersey still feel out of place. Speaking of the blue helmets; they were adorned with musket merit decals which was a nice touch and a call back to the Nehlen era. The blue helmets were also wore for all but 5 games this season. Finally to note the "throwback" decals which were normally worn once a season since 2013 were absent. It will be interesting to see if any changes are made during the offseason now that Nike has 2 "newer" uniform templates.

2016 Football Bowl Game: Miami

The Mountaineers finished the 2016 campaign in the Russell Athletic Bowl against Miami. WVU repeated a uniform combo for only the second time in the year previously wearing this combo at Texas.
